Market analysis and survey of residential carbon monoxide detectors in the UK and EU countries

2026-01-05

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas that can easily cause poisoning and safety accidents. CO monitoring is an essential defense line for life safety and industrial safety. According to the UK Public Health and Safety Agency, improper installation, malfunction, or poor maintenance of household equipment can pose a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) pollution. These devices include but are not limited to:
• Gas fired boiler
• Stove using wood, kerosene, natural gas, or propane
Heating equipment using wood, oil, or natural gas

In addition, the use of portable generators, barbecue grills or camping stoves indoors, in RVs or tents may also pose a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning; Even outdoor barbecue grills that have not been completely extinguished may accumulate carbon monoxide inside the tent, so it is recommended to equip a CO alarm when camping.

Regulations and requirements for carbon monoxide detectors in EU countries (summarized by major markets)
Within the UK and EU, carbon monoxide detectors typically need to comply with BS EN 50291-1 and BS EN 50291-2 European standards to ensure product performance, safety, and market access. Each country has developed its own installation and obligation requirements based on its own residential building type and fuel usage habits.

United Kingdom (including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland)
UK regulations require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in rental housing containing fixed combustion equipment (wood burning, gas, fuel, etc.); Starting from 2022, the relevant requirements are further clarified as follows: for residential spaces with fixed combustion equipment, landlords must equip them with alarms that comply with British standards (such as BS EN 50291). Violation may result in fines imposed by local management departments. For self owned residential properties, although not mandatory by law, industry and safety recommendations still recommend installation.

Ireland
The Building Regulations Part J in Ireland stipulate that carbon monoxide alarms must be installed or replaced when installing or replacing open combustion or non enclosed combustion equipment (gas, fuel, coal or wood), and require these alarms to comply with the EN 50291 series standards. For rental properties, relevant regulations also require the installation of alarms in rooms with combustion equipment.

Poland
Poland is gradually advancing regulations on residential safety alarms, including installation requirements for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, and is expected to gradually cover various types of residential properties in the coming years (specific implementation schedules may vary for different types of properties).

France
In France, regulations require the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in rental housing, which are usually completed by landlords before tenants move in; At the same time, all types of combustion equipment rooms should also be equipped with alarm devices that meet the standards.

Germany
The German building codes (including current building regulations) require the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in rental housing, gas or oil heating systems, or attached garages, and regular testing and maintenance. Other EU countries typically set their own installation guidelines and market access requirements based on the EN 50291 standard.

Italy
Some regional regulations (such as Lombardy and Tuscany) have put forward requirements for the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in rental properties equipped with gas stoves or gas heating equipment.

Spain
Regulations require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in short-term rental properties, homestays (B&Bs), and hotels as a component of safety compliance.

Estonia
A national regulation has been issued requiring all residential buildings to install carbon monoxide detectors to enhance the safety and protection level of residents.

Belgium
It is stipulated that carbon monoxide detectors must be installed in apartment buildings adjacent to the bedroom and gas boiler space (shared wall).

Jiazheng Intelligence has launched three models: MFC-CO-5000, FCMW-CO-10000, and FCMW-CO-S, to meet various application scenarios.
